Brief song history
Housewife's Blues is from the musical "1972", about a family in that year. The character of the mother sings the song as she wistfully thinks about going back to school and getting a job now that her kids are in college. The song is full of references to soap operas that were on the air in 1972, and still on the air in 2009. The song was performed live during a staged reading of the musical. Soprano: Doris Nash, Piano: Clark Wolf, Guitar: Russell Nollen.
Lyrics
Well I'm a housewife and mother, with just one life to live Yeah, I'm a housewife and mother, seems all I do is give Well, I don't like to be a complainer But my life is unchallenging, a real no-brainer Yeah, I'm a housewife and mother, with just one life to live Well I'm here all day long, and all my children are gone Yeah I'm here all day long, I need a magic wand Cooking, cleaning, dusting, laundry, doing dishes Vacuuming, watching soaps, and making wishes Yeah I'm, here all day long, and all my children are gone Well I'm thinkin' about all the days of our lives Yeah I'm thinking about all the millions of wives Stuck at home, an endless succession Of thankless days, drudgery, and depression Yeah, I'm thinkin' about all the days of our lives Well I'm stuck right here as the world turns Yeah I'm stuck right here, when will I ever learn? Fairy Godmothers are a fantasy If anything's happening it's up to me Yeah I'm stuck right here as the world turns Well I'm tired all the time, maybe it's menopause Yeah I'm tired all the time, maybe that's the cause Hot flashes, mem'ry loss, it's a riddle Why I'm not a patient at Gen'ral Hospital Well I'm tired all the time, maybe it's menopause Well I'm a housewife and mother, I've got the housewife's blues Yeah I'm a housewife and mother, I've got the housewife's blues Ohhhh...
